IRRATIONAL AMBIVALENCE: For Some of Us the Clippers are Still the Braves!

They Left Their Glory in the Snow back in Buffalo.

There is a certain sense of justice felt by many of us that the Clippers have only made the playoffs a couple of times in their thirty years since leaving Buffalo, and have never won as many games as the record set by the braves in '76 at 49-33.    Still... for some of us, just knowing the franchise that lived in and among us for those few sweet years still lives, if not thrives, somewhere, makes us at least conflicted about loyalties.

How're they doing presently?

It's another bad year. Check your favorite sports site for their current record. Coach: Mike Dunleavy; Notable Players: Marcus Camby.

The Braves Tradition lives on in LA-- sort of...

Pictured below is Elton Brand of the Clippers wearing a Braves throwback jersey in a recent NBA contest. Is this reason enough to continue to be loyal or are there other NBA teams that have a more legitimate claim on Buffalo support?  We were ready to anoint the Cavs as the Braves reincarnate until we found this photo. Maybe we still are. It's definitely a tough choice. But seeing that the franchise does make some effort to remember the greateness of their origins, gives us pause.  What do you think?

Of course those of us who live in other NBA towns are free to be unconflicted about our loyalty to the home team. But those who live in Clippers Country, may feel a double bond. And even some of the rest of us may feel a little twinge of irrational ambivalence when the Clippers play our new home teams. But these throwback uniforms? I know if I went to a Bulls/Clippers game and the visitors showed up wearing old Buffalo Orange, after making sure I hadn't died, dreamed it, or somehow been transported in a time machine, I'd be ripping off my Bulls gear pronto, and chanting, "Lets go Buffalo!" -jwh-

Those of you in Southern California- do you feel the Clippers connection? Write us.

Anyone interested in organizing an ExPat group trip to a Clippers game?

  • In LA?
  • Road games near you? (In Braves gear of course.)
