Little Known Buffalo Facts and Trivia

The Electric Chair, the Internal Pacemaker, Air Conditioning, the Metal Kazoo, and Sponge Candy, among others... were all invented in Buffalo.  See Made in Buffalo.

The Braves were not Buffalo's first NBA franchise (sort of). (Ever hear of the Basketball Bisons?)

The Buffalo Bisons played in 1937-38 in the National Basketball League which merged with the Basketball Association of America (BAA) a few years later to form the NBA.

The Buffalo Germans, Buffalo's first pro basketball team, were perhaps the most talented and successful pro franchise in Buffalo history, being known by consensus as the best basketball team in the world at the time, around the turn of the previous century. For more on this, see Sports History and links to Buffalo Sports Museum.

Send us your special knowledge.

UB Football Bulls Legendary 1958 Team were in the forefront of the Civil Rights movement... in spite of themselves.

Perhaps you didn't know this, unless you attended the UB/Army game last month, or saw ESPN's "Outside the Lines" a couple of weeks ago. UB's  only bowl invitation came for the Tangerine Bowl (now Citrus Bowl) in Orlando. However... it came with a catch. Due to the rules of the owners of the stadium in Orlando, the Bulls were contacted and asked to leave their two black players at home. The team heroically voted no, unanimously! They won something much bigger than a Bowl Game. Now, perhaps as a fulfillment of this event, UB is the only major university with African Americans in its three top athletic positions: Head Football Coach, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Athletic Director.
