Goodbye Queen City FC (Football Club) "Blues"
Hello Buffalo City FC... Pro Soccer in Buffalo Refuses to Die
Second Tier Pro Soccer in Buffalo
With all the talk about the now defunct indoor teams, has anyone heard of the Buffalo outdoor teams? The Queen City FC had been playing in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) since 2006. They won the league championship in 2007. However, they folded in October 2008. Taking their place in time for the next season, is Buffalo City FC (Football Club). The new club promises to continue and enhance the pro-soccer presence in Buffalo and seems purposeful about developing local talent for the world's highest levels of competition.
There is a unique system in the United States that allows professional soccer teams at any level to compete with the major league teams for an overall national championship in what is called the U.S. Open Cup. The title is usually won (sine the MLS's inception in 1995) by a MLS (Major League Soccer) team however, the Rochester Rhinos of the "A" League (NPSL's predecessor) did defeat MLS foes to win the cup a few years ago. Buffalo City will compete in this tournament as well, and therefore has the potential of bringing Buffalo its first national interleague professional title in any sport. Isn't that ironic? The new team is still in development, as is its webiste, but here's your link to what's available. Buffalo City FC Website

Replacing the Dragons and Sharks Buffalo ABA franchises, both competing to join the PBL (Premier Basketball League), is the combined Stampede franchise. This team began play at Koessler Center (Cansius College), as of January 3rd 2009. They won their first game and lost nineteen straight to finish the season dead last. It's all over now but the playoffs, for the current PBL season, and the Stampede are plotting for next year.
